Albania, officially known as the Republic of Albania (Albanian: Republika e Shqipėrisė, , is a country in South Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo[a] to the northeast, the Republic of Macedonia to the east and Greece to the south and southeast. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the west, and on the Ionian Sea to the southwest. It is less than 72 km (45 mi) from Italy, across the Strait of Otranto which links the Adriatic Sea to the Ionian Sea.

Albania is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Council of Europe, World Trade Organisation, Organisation of the Islamic Conference and one of the founding members of the Union for the Mediterranean. Albania has been a potential candidate for accession to the European Union since January 2003, and it formally applied for EU membership on 28 April 2009.

Albania is a parliamentary democracy and a transition economy. The Albanian capital, Tirana, is home to approximately 607,467 of the country's 3.2 million people, and it is also the financial capital of the country. Free-market reforms have opened the country to foreign investment, especially in the development of energy and transportation infrastructure. Newsweek ranked Albania 57 out of 100 Best Countries in the World in 2010

Central Bank: The Bank of Albania is the only institution in the Republic of Albania responsible for designing, compiling, approving and implementing the monetary policy. This policy is designed in view of fulfilling the main target of the Bank of Albania: achievement and maintaining of price stability. http://www.bankofalbania.org

 

Currency: The Bank of Albania is the sole issuer of banknotes and coins of legal tender in Albania. The monetary unit of the Republic of Albania is " Lek".

Issue implies putting in circulation banknotes and coins of legal tender. Every banknote and coin has the issuing year printed in it.

In addition, the Bank of Albania is entitled to create the denomination, form, size, configuration and other features of all Albanian banknotes and coins, of legal tender, as well as banknotes and coins made for numismatics purposes.

Legal tender is not a means of payment that must be accepted by the parties to a transaction, but rather a legally defined means of payment that should not be refused by a creditor in satisfaction of a debt.

Banknotes and coins issued by the Bank of Albania not withdrawn from circulation shall be of legal tender and widely accepted for all payments of public and private charges at their face value.

The currency (banknotes and coins) meeting the three following criteria:

issued by the Bank of Albania;
not withdrawn from circulation;
of legal tender status;
can be used as a means of payment and shall be accepted for all payment charges that public and private persons or different entities make with each other.

The Bank of Albania designs the banknotes and coins schedule insuring that they are readily and securely available to the economy upon demand, the policy of withdrawal of old banknotes and coins from circulation, and their exchange with new issues. It sequestrates and confiscates the counterfeit banknotes and coins.
